Stem cell therapy uses your pets own natural healing cells to help regenerate and heal injured tissues. The treatment is most often used to treat degenerative arthritis or osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, elbow, shoulder, ankle, and wrist.
Treatment is a two step procedure. The initial procedure involves surgical collection of a sample of fat from your pet. This is usually taken from the groin or belly. Regenerative stem cells are cultured from the fat and grown in a lab to achieve large numbers of cells. Two days later, the cells are injected directly into the affected joints and healing begins. Cells can be banked or preserved in case future treatments are needed.
Approximately 75% of owners of pets undergoing this treatment for arthritis report improved quality of life for their pets. Pets experience less pain and are more active/mobile.
Prior to any treatment, a comprehensive exam should be performed to evaluate for other health problems and to determine if your pet is a good candidate for this procedure.
