Hemangiosarcoma in Pets
Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is an aggressive, malignant cancer of blood vessel cells that primarily affects dogs, and more rarely, cats. It is often found in the spleen, heart, liver, and skin. Due to its rapid growth and tendency to rupture and bleed internally, hemangiosarcoma is considered a medical emergency when discovered.
At Central Texas Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital (CTVSEH), we provide advanced diagnostic and treatment options to help pets with hemangiosarcoma live longer, higher-quality lives.
What Is Hemangiosarcoma?
Hemangiosarcoma arises from the cells that line blood vessels. The cancer tends to grow silently, often going unnoticed until it causes internal bleeding or other severe symptoms.
Common Sites:
- Spleen
- Heart (right atrium)
- Liver
- Skin and subcutaneous tissue
Breeds at Higher Risk:
Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Labrador Retrievers are especially predisposed to hemangiosarcoma.
Symptoms to Watch For
Because hemangiosarcoma often progresses without signs, symptoms may not appear until the tumor ruptures. These can include:
- Sudden weakness or collapse
- Pale gums
- Distended abdomen
- Lethargy
- Decreased appetite
- Difficulty breathing
If your pet experiences any of these symptoms, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
How Hemangiosarcoma Is Diagnosed
At CTVSEH, we use state-of-the-art diagnostics to evaluate your pet, including:
- Ultrasound and radiographs to locate tumors and detect internal bleeding
- Echocardiogram to evaluate heart involvement
- CT scans for surgical planning and staging
- Bloodwork to assess anemia or clotting issues
- Biopsy or histopathology for definitive diagnosis
Treatment Options
While hemangiosarcoma is a serious diagnosis, our oncology team offers a range of treatment options to improve quality of life and extend survival.
Surgery
- Splenectomy (removal of the spleen) is often performed if the tumor is located there.
- Surgery can be both life-saving and diagnostic.
Chemotherapy
Post-surgical chemotherapy can help slow the progression of the disease and manage metastasis. We use safe, effective drug protocols tailored to your pet.
Palliative Care
If surgery is not an option, we provide:
- Pain and symptom management
- Internal bleeding control
- Supportive care to maintain comfort
