Osteosarcoma in Pets
Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone cancer in dogs and also affects cats, though less frequently. This aggressive cancer typically arises in the limbs and is known for its rapid progression and high potential to spread (metastasize), especially to the lungs.
What Is Osteosarcoma?
Osteosarcoma is a malignant tumor of the bone, most often diagnosed in large and giant breed dogs such as Great Danes, Rottweilers, and Greyhounds. It commonly affects the long bones—like the humerus, femur, and tibia—but can also occur in the skull, ribs, and spine.
Although rare in cats, osteosarcoma behaves differently in felines, often growing more slowly and less likely to metastasize.
Signs & Symptoms
If your pet is experiencing any of the following signs, a veterinary evaluation is recommended:
- Persistent lameness or limping
- Swelling over a bone or joint
- Pain when touched
- Decreased activity or reluctance to move
- Loss of appetite or weight loss
Diagnosis
At CTVSEH, our board-certified veterinary oncologists and diagnostic imaging specialists work together to accurately diagnose osteosarcoma using:
- X-rays to identify bone lesions
- CT scans for surgical planning and staging
- Biopsies to confirm the diagnosis
- Bloodwork and chest radiographs to evaluate overall health and check for metastasis
Treatment Options
Osteosarcoma treatment typically involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and pain management. Each plan is tailored to your pet’s needs.
Surgical Options
- Amputation is often recommended to remove the tumor and alleviate pain.
- Limb-sparing surgery may be an option in some cases.
Chemotherapy
Following surgery, chemotherapy helps manage the risk of cancer spreading. We use protocols that maximize effectiveness while minimizing side effects.
Palliative Care
For pets who are not candidates for surgery, we offer palliative therapies to improve quality of life, including:
- Pain management
- Radiation therapy
- Bisphosphonates
